Since the inception of New Direction Services' programs in 1999, we have always surveyed the non-profit community in our local service area to determine if we are on track with the kinds of services the organizations need.
Our initial approach with the Non-Profit Success Program in New York was to reach out to agencies in Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan through sending out/hand delivering a random survey to 100 organizations in the area.
We ask the same five questions every year. They are non-open ended questions. The sixth question is always open ended to solicit the kind of feedback we need to see where we need to make changes and what we need to do to make sure our services are serving their needs.
The breakdown of the survey results for the past four years are listed here. Bear in mind that we survey clients every two years and the first time it was done was in 2010. The next time it was done was 2012 and the upcoming survey will be conducted at the end of 2014.
The survey instrument was mailed and hand delivered to agencies in the five boroughs of New York City. Timeline: organizations had one month (30 days to complete) the survey. For those that did not return them, we called them and asked the questions over the phone. In 2012, because of hurricane Sandy which occurred at the end of October 2012, the survey was not compiled until January 2013. We also had to re-mail some organizations the survey due to issues with the hurricane. Some changes we are making for the upcoming survey is to email it.
*As our work expands, we will report on our survey results in the areas where we continue to provide service to develop non-profit success. Areas include Alabama, New Jersey, Asia, Caribbean, Africa.
